Roman Polanski's 1971 version, The 1979 version starring Ian McKellan and Judi Dench, the 1983 version starring Nicol Williamson and Jane Lapotaire, the 1988 starring Gretta Scacchi... I know there are more including operas but I'm really just interested in which version brings the story to life and best represents the original ideas and themes as they were meant to be from Shakespeare's story. Thank you!

No foreign films or subtitles please :-) Thank you though! Maybe later, but right now I want to watch one in English.

Great question: if any play can be transposed to film this is the one!

Lovefilm.com lists a dozen or so productions and I have seen four;

Polanski (1971) I first saw this when it was first released (as a schoolboy I hasten to add!). Great opening scenes but I find Lady M a bit insipid and some of the lines have been cut

Doran (2003) starring Anthony Sher and Harriet Walters. Not seen the film but saw the original RSC stage production and the TV version. The chemistry between the two is amongst the finest acting I have ever seen on stage. Cannot think of any cut lines

Gold (1983) with Nicol Williamson. A fine actor, low cost production but brilliantly spoken, true to the text

Welles (1948) Personally I found this to be terrible..on so many levels

Hope this helps

Definitely the Polanski: the couple are young and sexy, it's credible that they're madly in love. The male lead embodies the ambition, ruthlessness, superstition and anguish of MacBeth. Also the production looks really good - lighting, costumes, sets, etc.

Nicol Williamson can't convey MacBeth's evil for me..

There is an excellent version transposed to Japan in Kurosowa's Throne of Blood
