Hmm... just a guess, but it's a guess......

I'm thinking it's no more than 8-10 inches long, not an -all- black head, and a kinda brownish body?

Or is it all black with a reddish belly and a ring around it's neck?

The first one (if you're on the same continent as I am) is a crown snake, the second is a ringneck snake. Here in Florida, both of these end up in swimming pools almost all the time, they're mostly subterranian, eat earthworms, ant larvae and other fun things that you can find under rocks and stuff. Sometimes after a rain or just at night, they come up and cruise around and inadvertently end up where they're not wanted.

Take your skimmer, skim it out, toss it back in the flowerbed, and karma will smile upon you.

Hard to say without looking at it but...if it has legs, even teenie tiny ones, it's not a snake. If there are no legs and it is real short and fat and sticky then it could be a slug.If it was IN your pool though, it was probably dead(already).Snakes are pretty good swimmers and graceful in the water.Snakes have long tapering bodies. They aren't so bad though but like you, Wouldn't want one in my pool. They are great for killing mice and rats.Doesn't sound like a water moccasin though. Get a net with a long handle and maybe you can catch and release. If you have not already done so.Have fun.

If the tail is long and skinny-ish then it probably is a snake but if it is not there is a good chance that is a legless lizard! We need more details.

You have to give more info... what state(or country) was it found in, what color is the rest of the snake? No one can figure it out from that info.
