What you call something very often shapes how people think about it.

As someone once said, even if a rose would smell the same by any other name, if you called it 'stench blossom' there would undoubtedly be less people willing to TRY to smell it.

Furthermore, words and names have an associative context, and most people can't help BUT associate. There's a reason why nobody wears a mustache like Hitler did any more - most people can't help but think you want to be like Hitler if you do. Likewise if you changed your name to 'Paris' or 'Einstein'. Or both (Be 'Paris Einstein'... that'll confuse 'em).

You can try to a less extent easily. Rename some things around you and you will find that other people are almost compelled to treat them in a different manner. Peace.

Names are changing with the time... and the purpose of the name is the same.. Just an identification of a person. When you say 'modern' it is seen people keep minimum letters shorter ones & pet names are even shortest one. But one cannot deny the fact that olden names are still used by so many people. It is important for them in the form of names of God/Godess, Heros of history, various planets and stars and so on. But surprisingly some people go for funny names of vegetables too and on later stages friends make fun of them. Some names are kept with high idealogical grounds and the name has effected the individual in shaping his or her personality worth their names. Those who believe in horoscopes will keep the names starting with a perticular letter. Some live upto their names and some reach such hights to bring credit to whatever name they got from parents. Names are important so that one must like it by meaning, pronouncing & glorious background.

Two things come to my mind.

first, a name for a person is , generally NOT selected by the concerned person. Our parents , in their awe of their offsprings want to feel that their child is unique . They want to give a flying start in this by selecting a unique name for their child. They feel it should sound modern and be modern.

The other thing is modern name , in the good old days meant some connection with their Gods, their profession and their beliefs. Not anymore . The more odd it sounds the better

The importance of a modern name is to seek an identify which separates a person from the rest of society. Having lived in a world full of Richards, Janes, Toms, and Marys for centuries, a new modern name, signifying the time and culture in which we live, is preferable to people in our society in order to move forward and shape a new, collective, community identity which rises from the old.
