Ok, I cant get DSL at my house. But my neighbor 2 houses down can get it. He lives about 1/10 or 1/5 of a mile from me. Is there a way to get a wireless router strong enough to get the signal to my house? And can I use this for Xbox Live?

Thanks!

Im not understanding what would keep you from getting DSL in your home but 2 doors down can, unless its your parents saying no.

Anyway, this can be done, but it certainly will not be cheap.

The easiest way to set this up would be to purchase:

2 routers (one for each house)
2 wireless access points (one for each house)
2 high gain outdoor directional antenna's (one for each house)

At you neighbors house the connection would be like this:
-Ethernet Cable from DSL modem to wireless router
-Ethernet Cable from wireless router to wireless access point
-connect high gain outdoor antenna to access point, mount the antenna on the roof pointed at your high gain antenna on your roof.

-connect the equipment in your home the same way with the exception of the dsl modem

You would then configure the access points to work in point to point mode

Thats basically it......

It wont be DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) meaning its hard wired... and about the only way you can run a distance greater than 250 ft is using fiber optic, or if you want to pay for a couple extra phone lines you can have an additional line added to both house a dedicated computer and have the connection run that way.... longer explanation necessary. another way would be to run the longest distance you can and connect a wireless router to it there oh and you would need power at that location as well... all these are going to be longer answers than i want to spend writing... now you can get sprint wireless card or a cingular wireless card and run the internet connection sharing wizard but it will not be cost effective...

Why can you not get dsl it avaible almost all over contact your local phone comppany and ask what they offer and then buy a wireless router for you house and pay to have it and then you can have it. most phone companies have dsl or something just as good. If not try calling you cable company they are the two best companies that supply it

Yes, you can link from his house to yours. If he agrees and if the DSL company does not prohibit his "sharing" the connection.

You just need a couple of high power wireless point to point units. He aims one at your house, you aim one at his. You can connect a router within your house to use the inbound link from him. You will then have "local" wifi for your Xbox.

It isn't cheap but it can be done.

Check for point to point links.
Units are about 200-400 each end.
I have used them up to 10 miles.

It is very unlikely you can do what you ask. The distance is too great adn this is not what a typical home type wireless router is designed to do.

I also do not beleive it would be legal to do so either.

Maybe you have cable tv in the area and can get broadband internet from them.
