Why has my neighbour has a lovely green lawn and mine is patchy and dull?

We both have trees, I have seen him watering his but I dont mine. I recently mowed mine and its awful. Any suggestions? Is grass seed the answer and just water it?

Oh, it's more than just water, but since you haven't been keeping up there, that's a start. Trees and grass compete for the water. Could be your tree is out competing the lawn for the precious liquid.

Have you fertilized the lawn? With the competition, there's only so many nutrients available for both, supplementation is necessary.

Also you have to make certain the soil if well aerated (oxygenated). The thatch layer that sits atop the soil and comprised of dead grass roots, must be removed. Also the soil needs to be aerated by having holes poked into it, thus allowing oxygen down to the roots.

But first..........WATER. If you are living where there is water restrictions.......well.....not much you can do. Could be your neighbor's lawn was healthier before the drought and thus will take longer to turn brown.

If you have a dog, that could be the problem. Their urine is very acidic and burns grass. Train your dog to only urinate in one specific area of the yard. This will keep the rest of the lawn green and lush.

If you don't have a dog, put your lawn on a watering schedule, or invest in timed sprinklers. If you're looking for quick results, this is the way to go. You're lawn should perk up in about a week or two.

Buying seed will usually just feed the birds.

Buy a weed killer that will kill everything but grass in your yard. Then, get grass seed that is consistent with the type of grass you already have in your lawn and spread it around. You can also buy a bag of Lime, which helps the soil absorb the grass seed and is also a good fertilizer. After seeding, make sure you fertilize often and keep your grass watered. Soon, your neighbor will think the grass is greener on YOUR side of the fence!!

Check a few suggestions. Patches can mean grub worms. They eat the roots of your grass. Water is another consideration. How often do you mow? Mowing often keeps the grass looking better. Finally I use Turf Weed and Feed on my grass, and since I have, my lawn looks like a park.

If you currently have grass then make sure you are watering just before dawn so as to prevent root rot from watering at night. You want to put down about an inch of water per watering. Also apply fertilizer as appropriate for your lawn.

To get a good lawn is very labour intensive,it needs feeding with feed and weed regularly,watering,and at this time of year cutting twice a week.

You need to feed your lawn, I use Miracle Grow lawn food and my yard looks great. Be careful not to overfeed it or you will have to cut your grass 4 times a week.

yes, get a good grass seed, weed and feed and water regularly (before a hosepipe ban starts again!) and cut regularly too.

watch for birds tho as they will eat all the seeds.

he probably uses feed an feed...twice a year at least....waters it..and you have to make sure in hot weather you do not cut it to short or it will burn under the hot sun...when in doubt ask him..i am sure he will be happy to share some tips seeing how no neighbor wants to look at an ugly lawn
