Last night, I saw a roach on my back steps. I stepped over it a few times going in and out of the house, but it didn't move until I relentlessly sprayed it with all-purpose bug spray. Then I sprayed all around the concrete steps. This morning, I found what might be another roach dead near where I sprayed the most. The first roach was large, a bit over an inch. It was a reddish brown color. The second, is a little smaller and almost black. It was also less "boxy" looking.

Our back concrete steps are in bad condition. They're pulling away from the house and have some cracks, crevices, and holes near the base. Last night was hot and muggy and working up to a big storm. We were running the air conditioner. I'm in the south suburbs of Chicago. I'm not sure what other info might help.

What do I do now? Do I need an exterminator, or can I handle this problem? Do I even have a real problem? Help!

I looked at online identification guides for roaches, and I don't think it's a German cockroach. This bug was really big, over an inch, about the size of a cicada, and red.

Nevermind about the black roach, though. I looked at it again, and I think it's just a beetle.

seeing a roach outside is normal, outside is where they belong. If they are the larger cockroach, even one or two in the home here and there does not mean you have a problem, they can get in from any small crevace, even just squeezing under your door in search of food or water, but they don't multiply too quickly.

But if they are the german roach, the smaller ones that multiply like crazy, if you see ONE of those little german ones in your house that can mean there's enough to start a whole colony. Use Google Images or Yahoo Images to learn the difference between the species.

Outside Cockroaches

A good rule of thumb for roaches.. for every one you see.. there are at least 100 you don't see.

I'd call an exterminator.. spraying outside the house isn't going to do anything. It'll just drive them inside faster. And once they get inside.. well, they get into the walls and once that happens you might as well move out.

Especially if they're german cockroaches (the smaller ones).

You'll know right away when you have an infestation.. generally there's a very noticable odor and you'll have little brown pieces of what look to be sand in the corners of your rooms. But uhh.. it's not sand :(

Outside Roaches

Why would you want that? All animal species have an exponential rate of increase. The vast majority of cockroaches (and every other kind of animal) do not get to live out their natural lifespan. Were it otherwise, pretty soon the earth would be replaced by a giant ball of cockroaches expanding outward at the speed of light.

I hope not, I saw one outside my door the other night. But I haven't seen any inside. Just make sure you don't have any food lying around.

I would get an exterminator pronto. roaches are disgusting, dirty and contribute more to bad health. Where there is one theres more. EXTERMNATE NOW BEFORE ITS TOO LATE

Probably so, call your exterminator, or pool boy to get rid of them.
