I am going to get my first injection of depo provera, in a week. Is it okay to start having sex right after this injection or should I wait a few days? This will be my first time of being on birth control, I'm a virgin.
I am getting the injection because I don't think I could remember to take the pills at the same time everyday. I have read the side effects and warnings and am willing to give it a try.
Thank you.

Depo Provera is very effective form of birth control. If you start the first injection within the first 5 days of your period, it is effective 24 hours after the shot is given. If you start the injections any other time during your cycle, you need to use an extra form of birth control (abstinence, condom) for 7 days. If you don't get the 2nd injection 10 to 12 weeks after the first, you can get pregnant.
Just remember, this only prevents pregnancy...not STD's....

PLEASE rethink having the depo! The side effects are awful! I was on it for four years, and regret everyday of it. You are moody, feel tired all the time, have NO sex drive, and those are just a few of the side effects. Type into a search engine dangers of the depo provera and read more first. To answer your question though, I think it was a month until I could have unprotected sex after getting my first shot. There is a new birth control pill coming out in July called lybrel that was just approved by the FDA. MUCH safer...and you do not get your menstrual cycle with it either. Anyways, I am not meaning to scare you...I just know how awful it made my life, and I know many that were on it for a year or so and had MAJOR health problems because of it, and on that can not have children now because of having it.

Depo is indeed an excellent contraceptive for women who forget to take their pill on time.
Just remember that MEN LIE. Especially about sex.
Use protection or you could catch a disease. Yes, even the first time.
Ask the nurse who gives you the injection when you will be protected from pregnancy.
I would advise you to explore and play, and not feel you have to have sex on any particular day. Don't rush, you have the rest of your life to practice!

NOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooo
Please reconsider this!
There are SO SO many negative side affects of this shot that it is NOT funny. Please read up on it on the internet before going in to get it done.
I was on it for four years and I am so glad I am off of it.
I had weight gain, loss of libido, horrible mood swings, and it affects your bone density in a negative way.
There are class action lawsuits against Pfizer for how this drug treats women.
Please, I beg, reconsider this shot!
I was on it because of my fear of not remembering to take my pills BUT I am on Kariva (Pill) now and just set my cell phone to go off at 5pm and take it when the alarm goes off. Just set it for a time that you would normally be home and not doing much, take it when you first get up in the morning.
