I do not have internet access where I live. I am interested in purchasing Nextel's wireless plan which will help with my laptop, but not with my desktop. (Desktop does not have the card slot for the wireless card.)
Is there any way to hook-up my laptop to my desktop and have internet service on my desktop?
Thanks!

Yes there is a way to share your Sprint/Nextel wireless internet. Using a D-Link DIR-450 3G mobile router you just insert your sprint/nextel pc card into it and it will share the internet just as if you had DSL or Cable. You can get one here:

Good Luck HTH.

I have used a 3G card in a wireless router and ran 3 computers all off the wireless router (see link below for the configuration). Works very well but maximum connection speed was 382Kbs which is about 1/2 the speed of most true broad band downloads. So if your doing a lot of Skype calls or music downloads, a shared mobile broadband card will work satisfactorily but will not be impressive especially if you have multiple downloads occurring on both computers -- pipe is just not big enough.

You can conect to the router via CAT 45 cable or wireless so it is very flexible (you will need a wireless NIC card in the desktop -- assume you already have wireless capability on the laptop).

NOTE: the cost on most mobile broadband plans is about $60 per month -- you should use this type of configuration only if you travel a lot and need to have internet access on your laptop almost every where. Good luck.

Yes, if you do have a wireless network card in your laptop, (like the laptop I am using right now), you will only need a wireless router. You plug the cable modem into the wireless router. You may have to get a wireless network card for the desktop, but am not too sure. You can ask at the place you get the wireless router. Hope this helps.

Yes, just hook up a cat 5 cable to your desktop and then on your laptop make a new network connection with ICS(Internet Connection Sharing) enabled.

The wireless internet services are sold as device specific - and they do not like the use of routers or internet connection sharing.

I believe you won't get these to work.
