I don't know but I have never heard of a UK employer doing this unless you have not returned it when you left
Is the Company otherwise a good employer or are they the grasping see you in hell types?
I know that protective boots are often sols to an employee at a reduced rate deducted from pay over several weeks

Read any agreements\policies that exist about such matters. It is possible if it states that they have the right to do so.
Ask them why they did so. It may be that they don't want to lose anymore money from other uniforms not returned on good order.
Also, if the cost is allowed, it becomes a tax deduction for you as well.

If it is in the handbook that you have to pay for the uniform, then they can charge you. You might want to question them about the rules on uniforms. They have to tell you that they are charging you for it, so you really need to check it out. And, if you have to pay for it, then you better keep it if you decide to quit.

You can be charged for your uniform. The company should have told you a head of time. Most places that it out of your check instead of sending you a bill unless you quit and didn't turn it back in.

No i dont think that is legal. If they require a uniform they need to give you some free. Go complain to the employer or call corporate office.

No, it's perfectly legal.
Some employers have a clothing allowance (especially common in police depts).
However, if you are being charged, then you eligible to deduct that cost on your Schedule A of your taxes (provided you can itemize).

Many employers do. Hospitals, for example! But it's really not such a bad deal, as you're saving on the wear and tear to which your nice clothes would be subjected if you had to wear them to work every day. Think of it that way!

It is not illegal. You probably signed for it without realizing when you completed all of your new hire paperwork. If you did not sign for it, then I believe you can request a reimbursement, but I wouldn't guarantee you still had a job especially since it is during your probationary period. Proceed with caution.
