My partner was banking with the woolwich (trading solely as Barclays now) He has 2 accounts, 1 basic and the other a current account. both these accounts were transferred to barclays. He had a debt of 105.00 on account (basic) and now barclays have taken £105 out of his current account and put it in the basic account to clear debt. can they do that? as the accounts were originally opened with woolwich. Barclaycard did the same a week ago and they refunded the payment. this has now left us with £7 between us until tuesday, I know he should pay his debts but dont critise u dont know our circumstances. any help would be good

Yes, they can.

(this is why most people have accounts at different banks)

NB. How did he manage to run a "Basic" account into debt ??? I can ONLY assume it was down to Bank Charges ... (eg when they bounced a cheque ?)

If so, get your charges back ... they are unfair and illegal ... follow the process below exactly ...

I don't see how they can do this without consulting you. What if you had debts on both accounts? I would contact them by Barclaycall. I've had my run ins with Barclays but I've found more latterly that calling them and explaining that "I don't think you're being reasonable" quite politely usually works well. If you're not happy with something, it usually goes quickly to their complaints team who are pretty fair. I changed to an Additions account and the whole farce was a complete mess, but to be honest, the complaints fella I spoke to was very nice and refunded all the charges I got (... well it was their fault!!) with no argument at all.

hmm I read somewhere that I think they can, but they have to contact you first. Are they in just his name? or yours also? I'm sorry that I can't be more help, ring up customer services and ask what they're up to!
