My father owns a goldfish tank at home. They really are, beautiful, shimmery creatures. They swim gracefully about, seemingly happy. No predators. Meals routinely assured....

But to me, they are simply swimming in the wake of their own recurring slipstreams. Returning to the same spot, again and again all their lives. Their beauty is merely for display, a showcase. Nothing more.

And I would not choose a life in such suffocating idleness.

Salmons on the other hand are inherent adventurers. They embark on amazing life journeys, venturing hundreds of miles upstream against strong, cold currents. Returning to reproduce at the very same place they were themselves spawned.

The goldfish is my metaphor for a life in a cage. The salmon, of freedom and purpose. I would, choose freedom and purpose.

Even if I were to be unfortunately caught for a fancy item in a restaurant's menu. Even if the oils under my skin, my precious Omega-3, is to be encapsulated for the supplementary needs of geriatric old ladies.....

I would think of it as a life well lived, even for one so short.

At least my capture and subsequent passing would be of a worthier purpose than to simply flip over a golden belly in putrid recycled water, and then only to rot away in some strange and utterly foreign metal dumpster...

The goldfish is a predisessor of the hemopheliac genre whose ansestors swam the oceas during the earths early years. The goldfish is a much better choice becuase its gills can open up for easy freshwater inhanace causing the goldfish to recieve a great deal of oxygen which in turn causes the fish to be more agile and active. A salmons gills are what scientists call resperatory deffective galopigos premature syndrome (RDGPS) which meens that when a salmon swims it actually will not recieve a generous ammount of oxygen which will cause the unlucky fish to be less receptive (hints why salmon tend to be ate by bears).

A salmon any day, however it ended - hopefully with a wild free range, a battle, and an orgy. As a goldfish I'd probably beat my brains out trying to get through the glass. Unless, of course, I was a goldfish.

I guess most people forget that goldfish grow up. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with being a salmon other than having that instinct to brave fishermen, bears and dams to get to my original spawning grounds. Goldfish have a few things to "Carp" about as well though, as there beauty frequently betrays them. Of the two, I would rather be a goldfish, but secretly, in my heart of hearts, I know that my soul most resembles the humble catfish. I may not be flashy, pretty, and heroic, but I am a wiley old adversary and there is wisdom in my somewhat capricious movements!

Let's see a goldfish is seen as only pretty and is forever trapped inside a glass bowl, never to feel the ocean. And they have to bear living with people staring at them.
And a salmon, though is hunted not just by humans but also by bears, has a greater struggle for survival, they are free to swim the rivers and by some act of biology always know how to return home to the spawning pools - they know their purpose in life and take the death leap back to the spawning pools, b/c the future generation is dependent upon them to sacrifice themselves.
Give me the life of a the salmon, it may be a more difficult life, but at least I will be judged not merely by the pretty color of my scales but also by the vital purpose I have in another's life and I will be free to swim the rivers and make my own 'splash' in life.

There both a dead end, but aren't we all. A goldfish as the ignorance is bliss going and won't last long with a kid who doesn't feed you. And a Salmon knows it's going to death. But it at least has known fear to keep it alive to strive for a goal. Definitely the salmon. And they are very tasty too.

Salmon for sure.
Goldfish are little wussy pet fish kept in a teeny bowl their whole life with little dorky kids tapping the glass and never remembering to take proper care of them.
But salmon! Big mighty fish who romp around in the churny water and then serve a yummy purpose after death. That's awesome!

A "wild" Salmon...I might end up in a can some day, but at least I wouldn't get get flushed down the toilet and "played" with by some 2 year old who thinks I need to be petted ;)

Salmon! it would be so funny to be basically thoughtless and careless and just do what i do, eat, react, and ***** without ever thinking twice. plus goldfish SUCK, Salmon seem more random and sporadic, which I enjoy picturing freaking out when something happens....or making my way upstream just going nuts in the water and not even giving thought to it.
