I could be wrong but I thought a D&C was what they did when you had a misscarrage and they weren't sure everything was flushed out of your body..but I'm not sure what it stands for.

If not everything is taken out, there can be cause for infection.

Dilation and Curettage (D&C) Introduction
The dilation and curettage procedure is called a D&C. The D stands for dilation, which means enlarging. Curettage (the C) means scraping. Together, this procedure involves expanding or enlarging the entrance of a woman’s uterus so that a thin, sharp instrument can scrape or suction away the lining of the uterus and take tissue samples.

Today, the procedure is routine and considered safe. It is minor surgery performed in a hospital or ambulatory surgery center or clinic. D&C is usually a diagnostic procedure and seldom is therapeutic. It may stop bleeding for a little while (2-6 months), then the prior abnormal bleeding tends to return.

A generation ago, many women were not given this option for so-called female problems. Instead, they were left with the option of hysterectomy (complete removal of the uterus/womb) or other major surgery.

A D&C is seldom done as a lone procedure anymore. It is most frequently done as an adjunct procedure to a hysteroscopy and/or polypectomy. A D&C is often used for the following conditions:

Irregular bleeding: You may experience irregular bleeding from time to time, including spotting between periods. If the spotting develops into continuous midcycle bleeding, your health care provider may perform a D&C to investigate the cause of bleeding.

Too much bleeding: Bleeding with long, heavy periods, or bleeding after menopause, can signal a number of problems. These symptoms may not need immediate investigation. You may observe and record them. At some point, though, your doctor may look for a cause that is best detected with a hysteroscopy.

Fibroids and polyps: These conditions are very common. In fact, they are thought to occur in about 20% of all women. Fibroid tumors are noncancerous growths appearing in and on the uterus. Some even grow out from the uterine wall on a stalk. Fibroids can cause chronic pain and heavy bleeding. Polyps, like fibroids, are noncancerous growths and are a common cause of irregular bleeding. Polyps and fibroids can have symptoms that resemble other more serious causes of bleeding. Your doctor may still want to perform a hysteroscopy.

Endometrial cancer: Cancer is a scary word, especially when it is said about you. A D&C and hysteroscopy are often performed to make certain your symptoms are not caused by uterine cancer. It is, of course, important to detect cancer in its earliest, most curable stages.

Therapeutic D&C: A D&C is often planned as treatment when the source of the problem is already known. One situation is an incomplete miscarriage or even full-term delivery when, for some reason, the uterus has not pushed out all the fetal or placental tissue inside of it. If tissue is left behind, excess bleeding can result, perhaps even life–threatening bleeding. This is an important reason why your doctor will want to remove any remaining tissue with a D&C.

D and C is a procedure to scrape and collect the tissue (endometrium) from inside the uterus. Dilatation ("D") is a widening of the cervix to allow instruments into the uterus. Curettage ("C") is the scraping of the contents of the uterus.

Description Return to top

D and C, also called uterine scraping, is a fairly minor surgical procedure. The procedure may be performed in the hospital or in a clinic using general or local anesthesia.

The vaginal canal is held open by a speculum, and the opening to the uterus (cervix) may be anesthetized. The cervical canal is widened using a metal rod, and a curette (a metal loop on the end of a long, thin handle) is passed through the canal into the uterine cavity. The inner layer of the uterus (endometrium) is scraped away, and the tissue is collected for examination.

Indications Return to top

Uterine scraping (D and C) may be done to:

Diagnose conditions using the tissue samples collected (biopsies)
Treat irregular or heavy bleeding
Remove fetal or placental tissue -- used for some elective or therapeutic abortions and to remove any remaining tissue after a spontaneous abortion (miscarriage)
D and C may be recommended for:

Bleeding between periods
Heavy menstrual bleeding
Investigation of infertility
Endometrial polyps
Uterine cancer (early diagnosis)
Thickening of the uterus (endometrial hyperplasia)
An embedded IUD (intrauterine device)
Therapeutic or elective abortion
Miscarriage
Postmenopausal bleeding, or abnormal bleeding while taking hormone replacement therapy medications

I think you are talking about a gynocological proceedure wherein the Uterus (part of the reproductive system) is sort of cleaned. Most commonly it is used to end a pregnancy or to assist when a female has a painful condition called endometreosis. There is a lot of information regarding this by going to any search engine or webmd type of site.

Hope this helps to clear it up for you. If it does not, please feel free to send an e-mail to me and I can further explain.

D & C's are used for a couple of different reasons. If a woman has had a miscarriage, she needs one to be sure all tissue from the pregnancy is removed. If it is not, there can be serious problems. Sometimes it is used to stop excessive bleeding for one reason or another. It is also the form of abortion used early in pregnancy. And sometimes it is used to determine whether a malignancy is present(cancer). Your doctor can tell you why he is recommending it for you.

Women usually need these when the are having period problems... bleeding way more than usual for more than 2 weeks at a time and having big clots. They scrape to get all of the old stuff out and that usually puts your period back to normal.

Because I have big boobs! Oh you mean D&Cs OK, that's what the doctor does after an abortion, or a misscarraige. It's to scrape out all the junk left in the uterus after the fact.
