Anything to do with entertainment will always demand and receive great sums of money. And with ahletes, there are club owners or event sponsors cutting them checks, so they are employees...but to employers in sports/entertainment.
In this nation, education is really not looked upon in as positive a light as in other nations - please refer to The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman concerning this situation.
Until society as a whole places emphasis on certain careers and demand equity - in my area, a pro stadium and arena were built mostly on tax dollars, while the city school district was - and remains - a mess - there will always be the disparity and failure of will to demand what is right.

careers salary are based on income into the company, athletes get paid so much because every seat, hat, and jersey sold, plus advertisement all go into the company of their sport. Thus more $$$ to give to the players.
Teachers don't get paid because there is no real income coming into the school, some government finance but that's about it, plus divided among so many employees makes it less for everyone.
Can we change it, no.
I wish there was another answer, really I do my gf is a 4 grade teacher, but I really don't foresee that ever happening. There's just no way to set it up so that the atheletes will stay, they'll just go where the bigger money is.

You have a good question I think but in your example, teachers earn no money for the school and the football team does. As a pro athletes earn big bucks because people pay big bucks to watch them, the same is true of film stars and the like. Both usually take in more than the President of the United States too, not just teachers. Would you pay 50-100.00 for a seat to watch your teachers at work? The only way to change it would be if you would and if everyone refused to pay to see professional athletes and actors but I do not see that ever happening.

To most people, it is more important to be entertained rather than educated. The only way to change this is to change the fundamental behavior of men and women. They would rather pay $300 for a ticket to a basketball game than pay more taxes to educate their children.

No. First of all teachers get paid good money. Second of all the schools don't bring in millions and millions of dollars on jersey sales and ticket sales. If the salary of teachers go up then our taxes will go up.

It's called scarcity. Basic economic phenomenon. There are far more people capable of teaching than consistently hitting home runs.

the only way to change this is to reduce or get rid of the idolization of athletes........and stop taking public servants like teachers, cops, firefighters for granted.
