Cooking your own meals is not only more economical, but it is a whole lot healthier too. You control what you put in and how much. I used to eat out often because I didn't know how to cook and I was too lazy to learn. Once you get the basics, it becomes more of a hobby than a chore. For the purpose of saving money, I'd definately cut down on takeaway.

THIS is a really good question. You deserve a star for it.
We used to eat out at least 4 nights out of seven. For me, it wasn't that I couldn't cook, I just hated the clean up afterwards. It's so much simpler to be waited on and they get the clean up isn't it? And you're right, it was way expensive. What I decided to do to save a little money was to start taking my lunch to work, usually made up of the previous nights leftovers. This way I saved a minimum of 5 bucks a day. Another bonus was I lost a little weight by not eating quick burgers & fries every day. In a little over 3 months, I lost 8 pounds and gained a Kenmore dishwasher!!
I also started watching the coupon section for ads stating "buy 1 entree, get another of equal or greater value free". Most of my favorite places have them. Fridays, Chili's, Smokey Bones, Ruby Tuesday, O'Charlies and South of the Border to name a few. So we still eat out on the weekends, after dinner clean up is much improved and we have a little jingle left in our pockets!
Don't know what took me so long to figure it out!!

Odd question for me to answer, but I'll jump in anyway.
My wife and I can easily afford to eat out, but we do not do so very often at all. Both of us enjoy cooking, and find that we can many times make our food experience more enjoyable (and less expensive) by cooking ourselves. My wife is addicted to FoodTV, and I'm not far behind. (Rachel Ray has some GREAT recipes and ideas)
We tend to entertain guests at our house for meals, and find that the cost of entertaining a couple or two at home is a good time, good food, and costs us less than just the two of us going out to eat.

i'd make my own food and eat here before going out. Gives you more time to do than lining up at those fast food counters. home cooked meals makes you in control of the ingredients you put.

ha i already had to give up going out to eat, may splurge on a pizza every couple of weeks, take a lunch to work and dont go anywhere unless I have to. and definetly dont buy gas unlesss its absolutely necessary! being a average citizen sure is rough. Wish paris hilton( and all politicians) had to try it for a while, she would really break down then,,,
