I'm tempted to visit asia and europe by bus or whoever will give me a ride. I simply can't afford the plane ticket there so I'm wondering if, from california, I can somehow take a massive roadtrip through the bering strait. Can it be done? do boats regularly ferry travelers through there?

Lodging and expenses will eat you alive on a bus trip of that extent. and no there is no way to do Asia by land only. However; you will find that there are some real inexpensive tickets to Asia if you shop around. Try EVA air and some of the others. The LA times has great prices in their travel section every week but look out for ticket prices that do not include taxes. Taxes can really add up. you might try the courier trick. There are companies that need something delivered immediately that will pay for your flight The problem with that is that you can;t carry luggage you just carry their stuff. clothing and necessaries are really cheap in Vietnam Bali and Hong Kong. Once you are in Asia you can live really cheap. Many places you can live on $10 a day no sweat. I am currently living in central Vietnam and I am not returning to the U.S. I used to live in Laguna Beach and the beach here is nicer and I live like a millionaire. good luck

If you make your trip, you should check out the yearly Harley Davidson music festable at Lake Balaton in Hungary. It is a 3 or 4 day event held the first week in June. Plenty of on site camping and music, parties, dancing tons of bikes and bikers. This year 10 Years After is playing, a few years back we saw CCWR and the next year we saw Eric Burton. You can go for a day or for the whole event, hotels are also near by if camping is not for you. The lake is really nice, warm, clear , they have showers and WC's as well. www.budapestinfo.hu

Bear in mind that Russia has something like 12 time zones. The US only has 4. You must have a lot of time on your hands. Or you will.
