A carrot top is green, but the person with ginger hair's top is orange (ish) hence being like a carrot

There is an American comedian with red hair named Carrot Top. I guess that's where it started & now it's used comonly for all red heads. Liek all the blonde jokes - not all blondes are realy as dumb as they make them out to be.

Good Question.
I thought carrot top referred to their head (hair). Top being another word for head. (informal, slang etc). Top hat for example.
The one I always thought was strange is how red heads often get the nickname "bluey". Anyone else familiar with that or is it an Australia-ism used just by us. (We are notorious for word-playing practically everything).
