My cousin asked me this so I thought I might try to get some opinions. He has many girl mates (not girlfriends...nothing romantic at all). When he goes out for meals with any one of them they expect him to/he thinks he should pay. He wants to know that since it's not a date and they're really absolutely and completely friends shouldn't they go dutch?

My rules are simple, his and many others may vary....but they are somewhat complicated in some ways

1. First date - Dutch (why should someone you don't know pay for your meal)

2. 2nd Date and any date after that- The invitee pays the bill/check/tab or whatever you want to call it.

3. Friends - 1st Option: Go Dutch every time
2nd Option: Take turns in paying (Gotta be careful with this....Sometime when it's your turn ...You pay for movies, food, drinks, recreational activity.....their turn, food OR movies OR drinks OR rec. activity)

But basically...to lessen complications GO DUTCH all the time.....if the people in question don't like it...then it's obvious they only think he's only good for one thing...and since there's no "romance" involved....it's not his bod...

He should not pay for girl mates. Actually even with girlfriends they should do some "dutch treats". Young relationships especially in teen years, the guy does not have the money to pay for the girlfriend all the time.

Tell your cousin that he next time he takes a girl out as a friend not to go to a restaurant if he doesn't want to pay for the girl's meal , he could share a cup of coffee with her in a coffee shop instead. Automatically a girl will assume that this is a free meal , Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable accepting a meal from a Friend all the time , so my solution would be to tell her that this time is my turn to buy but the next one will be hers.

Dutch is good, and I also think who ever invited the other person out should pay.

go dutch, have'nt heard that for ages, thought the yonger gens would have another saying for it by now .but of course your thinking correctly they should split the billthey are just friends or he could pay one time and she should pay next time, usually with friends thats the way i do it and it seems to work.byeeee

If the man pays, it is a romantic encounter.
It is as simple as that.

Between friends, you split the bill and it does not matter if it concerns male or female friends.

What cheeky girls! If he offeres fair enough but they shouldnt just expect him to pay. Gah women like this giving us paying ladys a bad name!
Tell him to take them out for dinner and eat loads then bugger off to the loo and leave them there...will serve them right!

Absolutely, no question about it. And even if it was a date, most girls would still want to pay half so as to be under no obligation.

Occasionally...but same goes for the girl. I sometimes pay for my best friend who is a guy...but if you dont feel that you wanna pay for someone, then you prob are not that good friends.
