i saw a woman on tv who can speak cat and she charges rich knob ends a ton while she's sitting there going meeow meeow to their dozy sodding fur ball.

Typically, I think they set several food dishes down and line up a lot of cats. Then they watch to see how many cats go for certain food dishes. Obviously, everything is labeled and I'm sure they're careful about tracking results.
Perhaps, a while back, they were lax in this, but false advertising lawsuits are on the rise.

If 8 out of 10 cats tested ate this brand and not another brand - there is your statistic.
But who can trust a statistician??

i would imagine they sit two or more bowls of different type food down in front of a cat, and see which one it eats first, and do that with 10 cats, of course, most stats are manipulated to get the results they want, so they could keep bringing in cats till they found enough that liked their food, or else they could use an especially nasty smelling/tasting food as the other sample, and still their statement is truthfull, in a way

Because they put the cats in a room and put different brands in different bowls and whatever bowl the cat goes to means that is the one that the cat likes.
