Because it's rare that you see such a champion of any sport with such a humble personality... That and the fact that i think everyone is just appreciative that they are probably witnessing the greatest man to have ever played the sport in history, and that is no overstatement...
Nadal may be good on clay but he is not consistant with other surfaces... and remember the last time they played on clay Federer won in the lead up tournament to the French Open...

For me, it's the way he plays. Federer seems to play so effortlessly. When he wins, it's as if he should obviously have won. However, when Nadal wins, he often grinds it out.
I do, however agree with you that Nadal is a better clay court player. This year's French Open semis and finals should be very entertaining. Federer never won the French Open. Nadal, on the other hand, didn't win another major other than the French Open.
This doesn't mean that Nadal is only a clay-courter. He got to Wimbledon finals last year, losing to Federer. He beat Federer at Dubai last year.
I like Federer because of the range of shots he can make. If I could choose between being able to play like Federer and being able to play like Nadal, I'd go for Federer. But Nadal is amazing in his own rights!

What would be truly surprising would be that the man didn't have fans! Anyone who plays a sport with such finesse, intelligence and athletic skill deserves to have people applauding him and supporting him. To top it off he is a gentleman in victory and defeat. Even Nadal and his family and entourage are Federer fans and why not? They love tennis and Federer is the best player in the world.
Rafa Nadal in his own way is a good winner and loser too. When he pumps his arm it is to encourage himself. When he falls on the ground it 's because he is so spontaneous that he can not hide his relief at beating a tough opponent. He is much younger than Federer and not so sophisticated but he is a good person like Federer. Both deserve to have fans!

It's not very difficult to answer the question of this type. Not only for the sports mentioned but also for any other sports. Now let me explain: we need our brains and our body (techniques and health) If you have both you will bring excitement and pleasure to all. If not it's just the boring game.
Take Liverpool for an example. The team usually comes within the top fives and even win (rather won) the Champion League cup but cannot bring thrill to any games they've in. Because Benetez always waits for chances, not create chances.
Nadal is the escarnation of streghth only. Federer is the symbol of health and skilled techniques. Of course I love the latter.

He's the best player right now and has been dominating the tennis circuit for quite a while. It has always been a trend for a large number of people to support the "invincible player". Look at Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Michael Schumacher. They sure have a large fan base. I think one reason is the concept of winning. Who doesn't like to win? Associating with these winning sportsmen does make one feel good. Another reason could be he plays with a grace that no other active player has. Though I'm not a fan of his, his beautiful strokes are a pleasure to watch.

I think it just more than him winning, he's not one of my personal favorites however, when you see him play you can't help to become a fan. His game, the angles he creates are ridiculous. His such an overall good athlete on and off the court you can't help but to be a fan. Some people are sheep I'm not but you have to respect a great tennis player who can win and seem to dominate all with class and while being humble.

Same reason why people love Michael Jordan. People on top also attract a lot of haters too. For instance, I will argue that Federer doesn't have the competition that Sampras had. Federer doesn't have to play....
Becker.
Edberg
Lendl
Agassi (at his prime)
Sampras
Muster
Kafelnikov
and many others.
Federer is bad ***, but the men's Tour isn't what it used to be.

You asked why he has fans, not who is better on a clay court. Federer is number one right now. He is humble when interviewed, classy, doesn't grunt or pick his butt when he plays. He seems to make it effortless, and whether he wins or loses, he does it with grace and doesn't roll on the ground.
