And what does BB stand for?

As The Straight Dope explains, we owe the "K" to an early sportswriter named Henry Chadwick. In fact, Chadwick and another writer named M.J. Kelly are largely responsible for the scoring system baseball uses today.
But whence the K? Chadwick already had "S" slated for "sacrifice." So a strikeout became a "K", after the last letter of the word "struck." The reason a strikeout isn't a "T" is because "struck" was the preferred term of the day.

Here is why the K and reverse K (taking a 3rd strike!) exist. It is for scoring purposes and the S means Sacrifice (this is back when they originally did it!) on the scorers book K is the last letter of strucK! So there you have it! BB= Base on Balls

K is the symbol that is used on baseball scoresheets to indicate that the batter struck out, backwards k for a striking out while not swinging at third strike.

BB indicates that the batter reached first by a walk, receiving 4 balls. It's short for "base on balls".

BB stands for base on balls

Henry Chadwick is credited with originating the "Box Score"
The letter "S" was used to coin "sacrifice" so Mr. Chadwick decided to use "K", with "K" being the last letter in "struck."

^^^ dave d is correct.
S was already taken - striking out used to be referred to as "struck out" so they just used the last letter of STRUCK.

A backwards K is struck out looking while a right side facing K is struck out swinging.

Why K For Strikeout

it is really odd. a writer in the 1970's needed to abbreviate it using a memorable symbol. So he chose a backwards k, which is very memorable. And BB stands for walk... I do not know why.
