Mt. Kilimanjaro. Humans first lived in Africa. Mt. Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and easy to see for hundreds of miles around.

Mount Everest is still the tallest whether discovered or not...you may want to ask the question what was the known tallest mountain before the discovery of Everest

Mount Everest was still the tallest... just cos it hadn't been discovered doesn't mean it wasn't there... what you should have asked is what was the tallest mountain discovered before Everest, which i believe to be Aconcagu in Argentina (i think)

But if you mean what they named the tallest before everest was found to have the highest elevation of any land-based mountain, I don't know. Maybe K or Gasherbraum--who knows?
I think Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain if you measure it from its base in the sea.
