As for spyware blockers , the best is to use an Operating System that is not affected by spyware and viruses , like Linux.
If you have to use Windows , then keep all your protection up to date and also keep your fingers crossed because even with the latest protection ,something will get through before your updates take effect.
In the old Windows days I used Norton Internet Security , the whole package not just the antivirus - and found it worked quite well.

Norton AV is really an antivirus tool not so much a spyware blocker. You can download SpywareBlaster. It blocks spyware before it gets on your computer. The free version requires that you check for updates manually every week or so. The link is below. Install it, check for updates then enable all protections. It uses no system resources and works quite well.
SpywareBlaster (inoculates, not a spyware removal tool)

If you feel you have spyware already installed, you can download and run the following tools as well.
SuperAntispyware

Spybot S&D (free version requires manual updating)

AVG AntiSpyware

Adaware from Lavasoft (free version requires automatic updating)

(These programs can be run in Safe Mode after installation and updating)

Norton Anti-virus removes Viruses, not spyware.
You need to install: ONE Anti-virus (I use AVG free), ONE Firewall (Zone Alarm free), and Anti-spyware tools like: Windows Defender, Spybot, Ad-Aware, Spyware Blaster and cCleaner (free, I use all 5 regularly).
Google for them, install them and learn how to use them (use the Help TAB).

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.
download firefox for free, Just have a try:
