As an Englishman who has recently returned fron the USA, i feel i must ask this question.Is it because of the teeth issue?

Where in America were you? I don't have beard and I am not sure what percentage "most" is- I would guess that at least 75-90% of the popuation of the US do not have beards. The rest may be due to liking how people look in beards. I agree with the double chin theory as well as sometimes if a man has a "babyface", having a beard matures them a little.

I am delighted with your question; I imagine that I am several decades older than your goodself; However having visited many states within the U.S.A. in the past; I had always wanted to know the answer to the same question as you are asking:
I firmly believe that the reason so many Americans have an abundance of Facial Hair is because; in Nature Living Things adapt themselves to fit in with their local environment:- "American Women" are no exception to this wonder of nature:- just imagine the horror of seeing them without their beards & mouchstaches:

The teeth issue is one your country suffers with...my husband has a very sexy well maintained beard as well as beautiful White perfect teeth. The majority of Americans do not have beards...I don't think you have been here at all...

Most Americans don't have beards.
Only 49% are male; only 80% of them are of an age to be able grow a beard; and only a small percent of them elect to grow beards.

Do most American men have beards? I don't know where you were in the USA but unless you were at a Stanley Cup game I don't see where you would get that idea.

I wasn't aware that most Americans have beards. I can't think of a single famous American that has one.
