The justice system is a strange thing. First off, no one wants to spend time in jail unless it is a better place than the strreets they live on.
You spoke of OJ. If I remember correctly, a jury of his peers found him not guilty. It wasn't the media. It wasn't the rest of the world. It was the jury charged with making a decision that let him go. Blame them entirely. Not the system. They had their reasons. Sure, you can say they were bribed, worried about the ramifications, whatever. Doesn't matter now. It was all done correctly in the U.S. courts system that also ensures that innocent people are set free. Even that isn't always right.
Now, you ask about Paris Hilton. Why does anyone really care if she goes to jail? Because she is rich and people like to see rich people pay. No one cares if a homeless guy stays in or gets out. No one cares if a prostitute stays in or gets out.
I work in law enforcement. 4 years of which were working in the county jail. I have seen many different reasons why a person would be released. The fact that she was released doesn't change anything. The courts put her in, and the sheriff let her out. So, I ask this. What did she do wrong here? Paris can't demand to be released. There had to be a reason behind it. It isn't unusual for an inmate to be released early if they have a very short sentence when medical reasons arise. For instance, if there is already overcrowding, that means that there is a lot of money being spent on the daily upkeep of the jail. Secondly, the county shouldn't have to pay for a person to have medical care when they can be released early. You may not agree with that. Here's one example. about five years ago a female turned herself in to me on a felony warrant. She only turned herself in because she was due to have a baby three days later. If she stayed in jail, the county would have to pay for her child to be delivered. She even stated to me (and it was in my report) that she would make sure she was put in jail before the baby arrived. What does that tell you? She knows the system because she is a criminal. One that has no money and can't pay for her baby to be born. End result was I arrested her and she stayed in jail, had the baby, and the county had to pay for her medical expenses. Where is the justice for the taxpayers? So, it goes both ways.
Sometimes we wonder why they are in jail and sometimes we wonder why they are released.

Many laws themselves make justice a joke. The same law that labels pedophiles and rapists as sex offenders also labels men and women who were involved with someone well over 17 years of age (willingly) Murder is a crime, unless you manage to kill someone's unborn child... even if that child was wholeheartedly wanted by the mother. While in jail or prison, people manage to get time off for "good behavior". That good behavior wasn't in society where it should have counted the most. Most laws have loopholes and plea bargaining is acceptable. If you make a deal with the devil, expect the results to be less than grand. Does the witness protection program still exist? It not only helped real victims, but criminals as well. Nothing about laws or how they are applied has ever been right or fair for all. Sometimes, it just depends on who you know, how much money you have or how something will benefit someone else. Even a murderer or pedophile can be a victim... with the right amount of money or the right kind of lawyer... or both.

Doesn't show them in their best light, does it? I've been reading the explanations and excuses from the prison officials and the Sheriff's office and they sound so lame. She had an illness, it might have gotten worse. Do you think a poor minority woman would get the same treatment? Not in a million years. Advice to all those women incarcerated in that jail: don't eat the food, claim it's making you ill, and walk out that day.

In the Paris Hilton case it was the sheriff who made the decision to let her go home. You can write the sheriff's office at the site below. I have already written them twice to let them know they must have a different definition of justice.

The lady is on house arrest.
What is the difference if she sits in jail or sits in the house.
It is still punishment.
There are other more important issues in the world than PH>
