An absolute absence.
I have never had grandparents. Both my parents were brought up in an orphanage since they had lost their parents in the war. They met there, fell in love etc.etc.
They were the most loving parents I could dream of. Yet, the absence of grandparents was always a wound in me. To fill this space, I loved the grandparents of my friends. I was very lucky they loved me back, like real grandparents.
When I become grandmother, I know how to be a good one. Because I know how it is not to have any....

Old coins... she keeps very old coins... like a hundred year old coins.
One day, she climb over a 5 foot residence fence and took a ride on bus to a bank and exchange the coins for its face value. I dont know how much she made but im sure those bank tellers didnt tell her those coins is worth much much more.
I was pissed because I could have sold it for more and could have given her half the profit.
But she was a nice grandma, reminds me also of good times.

A sweet old woman knitting scarves, hats, and items for her children and grandchildren. Someone watching "The Price is Right" and thumbing through the newspaper or Bible or any number of Agatha Christie novels. Someone who is remarkably open minded and tolerant for her generation. And someone who is ridiculously generous and loving, despite all the nuts found in ye olde family tree.

A narrow, unpaved, country road that winds between the hills, eventually arriving at the Old White Church with the cemetary nearby. I never knew my grandparents, except to visit their gravesite.

I picture my energetic grandma outside working her butt off sweeping leafs off her patio and cleaning bugs & leafs out of the pool. She is always a pleasure to be around.
I also picture my other grandma who has passed away. I can picture her black curly hair with her glasses on. May she rest in peace.
