Have we had enough of this yet? Is being p.c. a good thing, or is it simply being "tactful?
Should we just say how it is, or do we need to constantly worry about stepping on someone's toes?
Gosh, I hope I'm not offending anyone with this question!!

being p.c. is like wearing a mask. you can't or won't say something because it might offend someone. i think it's hypocritical and unnecessary. people should feel free to say what they say no matter what. if you're a strong person emotionally, you won't be offended by some idiot's words or actions!

I think that Political Correctness has gone too far. I use "historical correctness" instead. I call Native Americans Native Americans, because that is the most correct name for them (although it does eliminate many native Americans, such as myself).
I call African-Americans black, because the way I figure, they have been in the US longer than me (my family came about 100 years ago), and I don't consider myself a European-American, Italian-American, or Irish-American. I consider myself to be American, and white.
As far as stepping on people's toes, no one seems to notice or mind.
I call gay people gay, even though it is not technically correct, because that is what they call themselves. I haven't know any gay person offended by the word "gay," and homosexual is WAY too long to use in everyday conversation.
I also think it's complete bull that the NCAA is doing away with "offensive" mascots. As an alumnus to the Bradley Braves, I think it's completely unfair that because a tribe of Native Americans that may or may not have lived in the area that is now the city of Peoria, IL (They now live in Washington or Oregon) decided that they were offended by our small school's mascot. They didn't ask residents of Mexico City if the San Diego State Aztecs was offensive. There are no more Illini left, and the Seminoles are paid for the use of their name. But ultimately, it comes down to money. Big schools like FSU and Illinois get to keep their mascots, because they rake in big dollars. Little schools like SDSU and Bradley don't.
Meanwhile, pictures of White conquerors are all over the place. No one is clamoring for the Vikings to change their name. The high school I went to had a mascot Seigy the Saxon. If I were German or English, I would probably have started a lawsuit saying that I was offended by my race being stereotyped by that, just to see where it went.

Being tolerant of others is a part of the human evolution. Evolving into a more complex creature doesn't just involve physical evolution like losing a tail, but it also involves a social enhancement that includes being tolerant of other's attributes or belief systmes. The United States is based on freedoms which hopefully facilitate this, otherwise we'd live in a Saudi like society where people are expected to fall with in certain social norms or they're shunned.
Being politically correct may seem absurd when taken to extremes, like anything else. But in it's pure form, it's inherently critical to a sophisticated society's progress and civility.

It's always nice to have good manners, and to treat others the way that we would like to be treated. This is what we should raise our children to do--it certainly won't harm them.
Our questions should not offend anyone - but, anyone can say that 'anything' offends them. I think that if we have a question that we really want to know the answer to--and it is put in terms that coincide with the 'Guidelines' we should be okay.

Being "pc" is tactful I guess and the right way to speak these days without offending anyone. I'm just sick of all of it. I think we got a bit carried away with the pc stuff. I think I tend to be more pi......politically incorrect!

PC is OTT.
doesnt matter if you're B or W, C or A, or LGBT, with a PD and MD with IMSCAP on your ABC. If it's NIMBY i dont care and no one else does either.
That's what i think. Too many stupid shortcuts so no one knows what anyone is talking about anyway.
i probably offended the ACB and the CCSFBL by my comments on the SA but they wont find me!

You only need to be PC if you stand to lose something or someone by not, or if you have something to gain.
I believe.
