An elderly female colleague of mine (who is, incidentally, the nicest woman in the world) has been reprimanded in my office for saying something was a bit queer, as in, something was a bit odd or strange - no homophobic interpretation intended at all. She's been in tears for some of the day because she's so upset. Is this an example of political correctness gone mad?

Yes it is. She's obviously of an entirely different generation, and meant no offence at all. I feel sorry for her, and your boss must be a moron!

i attempted to fee a pair of solutions right here however the equipment seems to be failing somewhat. Mojo, I agree - how a lot of our signs and indicators are actual written, they're often purely symbols which artwork besides in Russia, China or Japan (or everywhere else for that count number). No get entry to does not could be written, a logo is obvious sufficient and the comparable one is used in the process the international. the only signs and indicators that are frequently written are directional - and so if somebody finally ends up in Chippenham, Wiltshire, fairly than Chippenham, Cambridgeshire, I doubt if absolutely everyone fairly concerns. the single ingredient that i will declare is that between the superb written street signs and indicators I actual have ever considered became in Australia. in case you look down the 'out' lanes of a twin carriage way (which might recommend that in case you have been using down them you would be going the incorrect way), there are signs and indicators saying 'turn back!' If I observed a demonstration like that, regardless of if it have been written in jap, i'm advantageous that it may make me think of roughly which portion of the line I could be using on! I doubt if the newspaper report became the superb option. they're going to do something to sell their stuff!

Political Correctness is insanity of the worse kind! Do we really need a bunch of uninformed idiots telling us what speech etc is wrong or right? NO!

I really sorry for your friend - the word 'queer' means strange, odd, not quite right and has been adopted by bigots to describe homosexuals (as away from the norm - but what can be determined as normal?)

Mike

Awwwww..........that's not fair! Poor lady. I don't know why political correctness and commonsense can't some how come together and be friends! I can't believe the person who reprimanded her can't see the context in what she meant when she said queer? Can't some one in the office have a chat to the boss and explain?

YES!!! Obviously who ever reprimanded her is not only showing their ignorance of the English language but is demonstrating a complete lack of management skills in speaking to her in front of other members of staff over a remark where the word was used in context with no possibility of misinterpretation.Your friend should claim harassment!!!!

they cant reprimand her for that as queer means odd or strange, she could probably sue that company for stress due to an unfair reprimand. political correctness definitely gone mad lol

Yes. Poor lady. My mum says stuff like that all the time. I don't think anyone really takes offence at older people using that, because its just an example of a word that's changed in use since their day.
