ANY ONE WHO USES A COMPUTER COULD BE CALLED A HACKER. IN THE LATE 70s AND EARLY 80s COMPUTER HAD NO SOFTWARE TO MENTION. THE HACKERS FOUND NEW WAYS TO SAVE FILES, KEEP TELEPHONE AND ADDRESS DATABASES ALONG WITH GAMES AND OTHER SUCH SOFTWARE. THEN I*M, M*******T, A***E S**Y AND OTHERS PUT THEIR PATENTS AND NAMES ON THEM TO SELL. THIS DISTURBED A LOT OF THE HACKERS AND THEY STARTED MESSING UP THE SAME PROGRAMS THEY HAD WORKED ON AND THOSE OF OTHERS WITH VIRUSES AND OTHER FORMS OF PROGRAMING SINCE THEIR WORK HAD BEEN CLAIMED BY OTHERS. NOW THE VIRUS PROGRAMS MADE TO FIND THESE OTHER PROGRAMS MAKE SO MUCH MONEY THAT THE COMPANIES MAKE THEIR OWN VIRUSES BLAME IT ON HACKERS AND MAKE EVEN MORE MONEY. THERE ARE SOME REAL HACKERS BUT THEY ARE AFTER THE BIG COMPANIES MORE THAN THE HOME COMPUTERS. IF THEY WANTED TO MESS WITH YOUR COMPUTER WE WOULD ALL BE IN TROUBLE.

The term "hacker" refers to a person who is adept at programming. The press picked up the term a few years ago when viruses and computer break-ins were a new and mysterious phenomenon, so that by now many people associate the term "hacker" with criminal activity. The term may have originally been adopted from the earlier use meaning "one who has what it takes", as opposed to the non-hacker who doesn't.

i would say all of those answers are what we think a hacker should be. Making virusus attacking computers stealing information. In reality the real hacker is someone who believes that everything on the internet should be free... from software to music. That is what i have been told what hacking is.
