you are in the same boat as me... but unfortunately it might be difficult...
the AMD XP athlon is a socket A (also known as Socket 462) configuration... you can get some Semprons and other Athlon XP (not 64+) chips but they'll have to come from ebay... (fastest athlon XP is about 3200+)
to upgrade to a faster chip you'll need to upgrade your motherboard.... but if your PC is as old as mine... you'll then need to upgrade your ram to DDR2 as most new motherboards only take this kind... computers are a pain sometimes :D

You've got AMD socket A or socket 462 platform. Check first up to what your motherboard can support. Read the manual or download a copy from the maker's website.
Your XP 1800+ is a Palomino that runs at 133mhz x11.5. Fastest Palomino is XP 2100+ (133mhz x 13). Next up would be the Thoroughbreds. Fastest on 133mhz clock is the XP 2600+ (133mhz x 16).
If your motherboard supports 166mhz clock (333mhz fsb), you could upgrade to the Semprons w/ 2.0 Ghz max speed or up to XP 3000+ Barton.
But do not expect awesome performance result from the upgrade in the socket A platform. If you really want significant performance improvement, move up to the newer processors like AMDs AM2 processors. Even the dirt cheap AM2 Semprons would easily beat the Athlon XPs. And the new Semprons overclock fairly well.

Well, that processor is not specifically 64 bit. All Athlon XP's are 32 bit, and you'll need 2GB for it to run smoothly. However consider to completely new computer with a a core 2 or amd dual core because your Athlon processor will not run very well... But if u really wanted to just use the system u have purchase windows vistas basic (Just like windows xp but with a few extras) and 1gig of ram but I highly advise against this because of the waste of money and resources.

those are some old specs..
Athlon XP3200+ might be the fastest you can go on that mobo (that ist he fastest Athlon XP chip), you would have to check the motherboard vendor's website to know for sure..
or just buy a new motherboard/memory and CPU..then you can upgrade to the new standards (Core2Duo or AthlonX2)

Google, download, install and run CPU-Z. It will tell what platform the mentioned cpu is using (socket A, 754, 939, etc.). From there, look for the cpu with the fastest speed that's using that platform.

I used to have Athlon XP2400+, it is a great CPU, but they discontinued this CPU so its extremely difficult to find one, same with AMD socket 939 CPU, so i suggest you buy a new computer.

I have found this guide to upgrading your CPU (processor): http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~joyoung/cpu/page1.shtml
You have to make sure that the new processor is compatible with the motherboard (see socket type).
You can also try the PowerLeap Upgrade Configurator: http://www.powerleap.com/
