I usually cower in the corner, hand over my open mouth, pointing and screaming.."Get it away!Get it away!"...
:-)
Um...unless the mother says it first I'd stick with being all polite and nice coz in my experience, most mums find their babies the most gorgeous thing they've ever seen, so don't burst that bubble...
Come on Zoe, I know you can play nice...
or do I....

i'm not sure i would call any baby ugly.
in time the labour-squash will wear off & a lovely perfect baby will appear.
i wouldn't say anything, for fear of offending.
& i've seen many an ugly baby, after a while they've all turned into beautiful toddlers.
this may give you a laugh, when my daughter was about 4, while walking thru the town-centre we came across a woman with a push-chair, my lil darling at the top of her voice
" mum did you see that ugly baby " ?
she was right the baby had ears like prince charles & a screwed-up face like quasimodo!
i could hardly tell her off for stating the truth, could it?
but i was embarrassed & had a long chat with my lil princess about tact without compromising on honesty.
i laugh about it now, but it really wasn't funny at the time.
the mummy burst into tears & hurried away, before i could say anything.

Friends of mine have a really ugly baby....I mean a real shocker. When i first saw it i thought there was something wrong but they were cooing and clucking over it and saying how beautiful he was. Of course, in front of the parents everyone agreed but outside everyone was in agreement that it was, without doubt, the ugliest baby anyone had ever seen...he's about 2 years old now and he'd still frighten a police horse.

This sounds like you are living an episode of Seinfeld......lol
But seriously, do NOT tell the parents that you think their baby is ugly. You will have to do the side step with this one......
"oh my gosh, how exciting" or "you must be so happy now that he/she is here"
If you are a bad fibber, then stick to comments like that and don't even mention they way the baby looks.

My goodness, I have yet to see a ugly baby... I see them as miracles of life and lots of good things to come later in life.

You say congratulations. The baby is beautiful to the parents and beauty is in the eye of the beholder anyways..

I'm tactful enough not to point it out.
BUT, I honestly have never met anyone with a really ugly baby. Guess I haven't met any of the queen's uppercrust inbred relatives.

I say s/hes cute. No parent wants to hear that their baby is ugly. Their babies are beautiful to them. If you voice your true opinion, they'll just get mad and think you're a b!tch.

He's just like his father OR she's just like her mother! All babies are wrinkly and ugly at first!
