I'm new to Vista. Why won't it automatically play video files in Windows Media Viewer? When I click a video link nothing happens. Can anybody help me figure out how to configure this newfangled OS so it will play videos when I tell it to?

I've played both avi and wmv files, so I'm not sure if it's a codec. Thanks for the answers so far.

I would check the codecs. 9 times out of 10 it will be that. Vista comes with some default WMA files, run one just to be sure its not an installation problem with Media Player. If the files that won't play are AVI or MPG, its almost definately a codec problem. Vista didn't seem to notify me like xp did when a codec was buggered up.

Good luck!

You probably don't have the proper codec to play the video. you need to download and install Vista Codec Pack. Linky provided below...

I have the same problem with Windows XP so I don't think that it is the operating system I think that a setting in the security area or in the firewall need to be changed. Let me know if you find out how.

if it a .mov file or a .mpeg go download quickplayer!
if it is a .flv or a .swf get flash and shockwave!!!
it could also be a .rm so get realplayer

you could also download the movie and play it with VLC Media Player
