Kids don't need a lot of expensive activities in order to have fun and spend quality time with mom and dad. Parks are great places to go. The playground. A picnic like someone else said. Buy a jar of bubbles and blow bubbles for your son. He will have a blast chasing them. Watch boats go down a river. Throw stones into the pond and watch them "skip". Play some of his games with him. Play catch in the backyard. Grill hot dogs. Fingerpaint.

Well, small budgets are pretty easy to entertain with. You can plan a day out at a park. I know when I was little, I used to love just playing pass and just being outside with my parents. Now, my girl loves to come out with my son and I and watch us play, and play with us. Picnics are good, make some sandwiches, chips, cookies and soda and go to a nearby lake, ocean, whatever you have. After this you can plan a nice movie or tv night at home, or play some boardgames. I wish you the best of luck with this.

Take them to the park and feed the ducks old bread you have. Make a picnic and have it in the back yard. Play table games with them. Take a bicycle ride with them. Build a birdhouse together. Go out to visit the 'hound pound' or all the pet stores in town, if you live near a big enough town. (Beware of this activity, though. You may come home with a new pet!!) Find some woods or a state park and go for a hike, and swim in the lake, if there is one and it's warm enough. Come home in the evening, everybody get a bath, then sing songs together before bed time.
God bless you for caring about your family.

have a small picnic by the river or park... or camp out one evening at least... let everyone take their favorite past time that is participatory to everyone... like a guitar so everyone can sing, just plan for activities you could get to know everyone more... more often than not, though people are family, they are distanced by simply not knowing one's interest, hobby, or idea of a kind of fun...
better involve everyone in the planning, that way, for sure everyone would enjoy...

Balboa Park! I've lived here 30+ years and it's never failed yet for cheap/free fun. With summer here, there are lots of free music performances and other special happenings (see website http://www.balboapark.org/ for ideas) and also check out the free museum days (http://www.balboapark.org/calendar/detail.php?EventID=370). Pack a picnic lunch, throw it in a day pack, and you are off and running...
