To all those who think that it's all Bush's fault, and that Russia would be our friend if it wasn't for Dubya's lack of international bien-seance: I grew up in Russia, and I know the Russian culture and history very well. I am no fan of George W. Bush, but your comments are beyond moronic. (Note to Jezza: It's YOU who is the victim of propaganda.)
Russia is not America's friend. Never has been and never will be. Even if we elect Michael Mea-Culpa Moore to be our President, Russia still won't be our friend. Not even close. Relations can be made amicable on the surface, but the very geography and military might of the two countries destine them to be rivals.
As for Vova Putin -- if you think Dubya is bad, I suggest you learn Russian and go live in Russia for a few years. This is a man whose rhetoric is so vulgar and violent, he makes Dubya sound like an uber-liberal pacifist Harvard scholar by comparison. As an example, he said of the Chechens "we'll whack them on the crapper". He said it on national television. Think about it. This filthy gutter crap language was not only part but the general tone of the President's address to his people. ("Prish'yem ih na tolchke" are the original words, if you want to question my translation.) Putin is a KGB functionary, a spy, a communist, and a product of totalitarian political grooming. Which is to say, he is a thug and a dictator. And before you start spewing all that nonsense about Dubya also being a "thug" and a "dictator", ask yourself this: How many American journalists who criticize Bush have been assassinated lately? Do you honestly think that criticizing YOUR President puts you at any kind of realistic risk of having your skull bashed in with an axe in front of your home? Do you? (And, if you don't know what the **** I'm talking about, you really have no business discussing Russia.)
Wander over into the Russian corner of the Internet sometime. By Russian, I mean "Russian-speaking". You will see just how bitter Russians are about losing the Cold War, and how much they long for their bygone days of glory when Americans were frantically building nuclear fallout shelters in their backyards against what they thought was an imminent Soviet attack. The hatred the Russian public exhibits for America is a different animal altogether from anti-American sentiments in Western Europe -- the Russian brand resembles more closely that of the Middle East. I am still on speaking terms with French and Latin American friends who are a little more critical of the US than it deserves; but the Russian anti-Americanism is so virulent, so violent, and so relentless, I have ended up severing ties with virtually everyone I knew there, including people I've known since first grade.
I don't know about Putin, though he is certainly a hardliner, but as far as the majority of the Russian public is concerned, this latest spat is as good a pretext as any for Russia to flex its muscle -- and Bush's response of appeasement has been quite gratifying to them.
Europe is a tougher question, but as far as the US portion of the question is concerned, the answer is a definite "yes".

Putin is rolling back the reforms made in Russia of the last 20 years and trying to bring back all the old hard liners. Why don't you talk to some people who used to live there and ask them how they lived on the horribly small salaries they had.
Or ask any of the Jews that fled from there what it was like under old Soviet rule.

Russia is not an enemy to the US and Europe. That's why I'm so surprised Putin is so against the defense system.

What is going on around the world, right now, are leaders speaking out, standing up and challenging the U.S., because our leadership is so disdained, disrespected, and disregarded. I cannot remember a time when our own President was so badly disdained and looked down upon.
And, please keep in mind, it's not about the Countries, it's about the Leaders. Thanks.

It's a myth.
Why do you think they are an enemy? What false propaganda has the media been feeding you?
