Not all of what google offers is free. Google Earth and Sketchup has paid-for versions, but most of their revenue comes from ads that are on the side of searches. They also recently bought DoubleClick, an online advertising agency.

Google gets it's money from advertising, from pay-per-clicking. Everytime someone clicks on an ad on Google's webpage, that company that they clicked on pays google 1 penny, so if millions of people are on Google everyday, and clicking on those ads, that can quickly add up to millions of dollars a year.

In answering the question, "how Google [in particular] make(s) money," the answer is simple, they charge advertisers a fee whenever they want to become a "sponsored" advertiser. Check out those "sponsored" banners whenever you use Google search query/engine. The revenue generated therefrom by paid advertisement/banners is the source of income by which Google can set up a so-called freebie servers which hosts any number of freebie email accounts, personalized homepages to Google subscribers, many of whom, do not actually fit into the category of a "sponsored advertiser."
Good luck!

They are free service on one side.
They get money through adsense.
They get money from companies and ask us to put in our sites.
google gets a major part of profit.
if a company gives Rs.100 for an ad.
The person who put the ad in his site will get Rs. 1 and rest goes to google.
Google earns through this way of marketting.

All those results that say "Sponsored Links" are advertising. Web-sites pay huge money to have their sites listed at the top or over to the right of a Google results page.
