The idea is to look beyond your nose and think of larger good.
To be unresponsive to the welfare of environment is a self defeating act. How can you live well and lead a meaningful life an environment that is not optimal.

What is the reason for celebrating YOUR birthday? It is just a reminder that you are one year older. The occasion also takes you back to the time you were born and what were there and how etc. The others around you want to wish you well on your birthday , hoping that yet another important year ahead will go successfully.
World environment day is like the celebration of the birthday of the environment awareness. Each year we take stock of the increase/ decrease in awareness and take steps.

World Environment Day (WED) was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. WED is hosted every year by a different city and commemorated with an international exposition through the week of June 5. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), also created in 1972, uses WED to stimulate awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and public action.
"Stockholm was without doubt the landmark event in the growth of international environmentalism," writes John McCormick in the book Reclaiming Paradise. "It was the first occasion on which the political, social and economic problems of the global environment were discussed at an intergovernmental forum with a view to actually taking corrective action."
The topic for World Environment Day for 2007 was "Melting Ice – a Hot Topic?" During International Polar Year, WED 2007 focuses on the effects that climate change is having on polar ecosystems and communities, on other ice- and snow-covered areas of the world, and the resulting global impacts.
The main international celebrations of the WED 2007 were held in the city of Tromsø, Norway, a city north of the Arctic Circle self-styled as "The Gateway to the Arctic".[1]
The UNEP statement on WED 2007 states:
The day's agenda is to give a human face to environmental issues; empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development; promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues; and advocate partnership, which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future. World Environment Day is a people's event with colourful activities such as street rallies, bicycle parades, green concerts, essays and poster competitions in schools, tree planting, as well as recycling and clean-up campaigns.

Naturally, the World Environment Day is celebrated to make u and me and others like us aware of our responsibility towards keeping environment clean or face the consequences of the doom for our children.

In my opinion it's just a part of POLITICS, The GOV TS. of different countries meet at a place and name it a G-8 Meet, giving only fake promises that they will conserve the ENVIRONMENT. In fact a COMMON MAN like me and you does nothing to conserve ENVIRONMENT. You see, we drive VEHICLES, waste WATER, pollute AIR, etc. and when we discuss about it on a forum we say Hmmm! It's a seriuos problem of world today people should contribute in preserving nature. I say WHY PEOPLE are you not included in PEOPLE. Since, it's for just NATURE's SAKE that we show it see we have named 5th of April, WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY and do nothing to preserve it.
