Hi Sally D.

One thing that no-one has mentioned so far is the unreliability of the ferries at the time of year you are travelling.

The port police are much stronger these days than they ever were and, if there is a danger of bad weather, the police will not allow a boat to sail - full stop !

Also the timetables are very much reduced in the winter from what they are now. The winter timetables are not normally produced until around October time, so you check again then to see what is available. Make sure you check weather on your way back - there are many times I have had to leave an island early because there was bad weather coming which meant I would have been stuck for a few days.

I've always found Greek Ferries to be a good reliable source of information.

You take the metro from Syntagma or Monastiraki and go to Piraeus. You take the ferry from there - preferably a high speed ferry - and go to Santorini. You need about 3 days in Santorini and 3 days in Athens. However, December and January is not such a good time for Santorini. It will be deserted, shops closed, bad weather is likely, you won't be able to swim, and high speed ferries will probably not be available.

From Plaka area...hmmm...first take the metro from Syntagma square, change to the green line ,last stop Pireaus port. Then take the boat and go to Santorini. The slow boats are much cheaper than the highspeed ones.Santorini is a marvellous place, unique in the world, you can stay in rooms-to-let, in winter period they are quite cheap.

Take the metro/train system to Piraeus port (~1 euro) http://www.ametro.gr/#.

Or a taxi from Plaka to Piraeus port (~10 euros)

Then a Catamaran or a Ferry to Santorini (Hellenic seaways).

(~60 euros with return ticket)

Welcome to Greece.
