Go to economy on both sights:
http://www.umsl.edu/services/govdocs/wofact2005/geos/us.html
then go scroll to china at the top of the page and compare.
China has 10% of its pop'ln below the poverty line.
The USA has 12% of its pop'ln below the poverty line.
Deal with it. Screw your excuses. This is the CIA stating this.
And no doubt in the past couple of years, the USA has gone up, while China's has gone down.
China's been developing for 25 years.
The USA for over 200 years....why do you have more people without homes and food and medicine than China?
What's your excuse for that?

of course....chinese don't have houses and cars with garages and swimming pools (unless you're loaded)
...the point is:
More people in China have food to eat and a place to live than those in America.
1/6th of Americans are on the poverty line right now (2007)...almost 50 million Americans on the poverty line, with no health coverage...nothing, not even a pot to piss in.
Chinese take care of other Chinese. Americans take care of themself.

Again...of course the income disparity between China and the USA is great between families.
The point is, re: water, food, shelter, health....basic human rights, China is currently better off than the USA.
These are basic human rights ...food, shelter, health. And there's a greater % of Americans living without these basic rights than Chinese.
Deal with it.

Don't believe the Chinese statistics. China is a dictatorship and they fake statistics as they do for everything else. I visited China and if you go to the country you would be shocked at the level of poverty over there. And the country is the norm. Far more millions in the countryside than in cities. Even in cities, poverty is striking, but you have to look beyond those empty sky scrapers.
The CIA does not make Chinese stats. They just copy what the Chinese government says.
Having said that, Americans are not as rich as they might think of themselves. Millions are struggling to pay their rents and have no medical insurance.
The US government, a democracy, does not fake statistics. They just put a spin on it. So make sure not to buy it.

Your statistics are accurate but only because of how they are measured and defined.
The poverty rate in the United States is one of the highest among the post-industrialized developed world. It is, however, important to note that America's poor most commonly have adequate food, clothing and shelter. It should be noted that poverty rates only provide a snap-shot of the percentage of persons who are currently poor. Poverty in the U.S. is cyclical in nature, with individuals rising above and falling below the poverty threshold from time to time; as a result, far more than 13% of the population fall below the poverty line at some point over a given period of years.
China's poverty is, by statistical analysis, a lower percentage but involves many millions more people, that's 10% of 1.4 billion people, few of whom are nearly as well provided for as an American in poverty.
You cite, as your source, the CIA World but only looked at the raw percentage figures without understanding what they mean. For example, the average GDP per person for China is $5400 and the US is $45,000, which simply translates to a society, China, that is still very poor. Their unemployment in urban areas is almost 10 % and their rural is 20 %.
From 100 to 150 million surplus rural workers are adrift between the villages and the cities, many subsisting through part-time, low-paying jobs That's equal to one-half of the population of the USA.
China's history is thousands of years old, not 25...........you really are terribly uninformed although I understand your passion and sense of patriotic fervor.
I've made trips to China and cannot even begin to describe the poverty, pollution and despair although there are beautiful people and beautiful sites, you need only to move a few blocks away and see the most awful living conditioons imaginable.
Our USA people below the poverty level live like kings compared to those in China, most have cars, TV sets, and living conditions vastly superior to the kinds of shanty huts in China. .Their 10% is 140 million people, nearly half the entire population of the USA. Our 10% is 30 million, a difference of ONLY 110 million people.

Technically, 3 times as many Chinese are poor, but only because their population is more than 3 times greater.
I keep saying that we're dropping in our position in the world. Most European countries have a minimum wage double ours, preventing poverty, getting everyone paying taxes, and everybody is participating more on the demand side.
35 million poverty-stricken Americans don't pay taxes, don't buy cars, computers, houses, or much anything else, and their low wage jobs are with useless little companies that offer our country nothing of value. In reality, Americans in poverty is substantially greater than 12%. The Feds place the poverty income level ridiculously low.
This is a consequence of globalization. The top countries will go down, then back up, back up, etc. like a teeter totter. This is because a country with a strong economy will end up with a more valuable currency, which chases awy manufacturing jobs, turning that country into a service economy, which causes it to become a consumer driven market compared to poor manufacturing economies, which then become stronger though, since they're manufacturing everything, then their currency goes up in value, chasing manufacturers away, etc. See the pattern? China knows and that's why they won't allow their currency to 'float'. As long as their currency is worth less than ours, they'll continue to rise as the world's premiere manufacturing economy. Bush is trying to get them to detach their currency from ours. They refuse. Smart!! However, China's currency will also sink with the dollar relative to other currencies, so China could lose the manufacturing jobs to Arab and African countries.
The time to increase your minimum wage is while your a service economy. This is because it results in less inflationary pressure. Raising wages as a manufacturing economy is more inflationary.

Because the Poverty line in every country is established by that country.
Do you know what China considers poverty ?
The US could say the poverty line is $5,000 a year and have no one under the poverty line.
Your comparing apples and oranges.
The US poverty line for a family of 4 is higher than the average income in 174 out of 229 nations in the world.
Oh, I found China's poverty line.
It is $85.00 US a YEAR !!!!!!!!!!

Economics, not politics. Part of it is politics because only the democrats are trying to raise the minimum wage, but in today's job market only a small percentage of people make enough money to get by. Those people are getting tax breaks courtesy of George Bush.

The "poverty line" according to American standards and the poverty line according to Chinese standards is two different things. The Chinese hardly have what Americans have, even poor Americans.
You get this information from the CIA? Off an internet site? Doubtful. I wouldn't put any credibility to it.
My thoughts to you..........if you think Communist China is better, pack your crap and move there. Us poor Americans would rather be poor here, than "Chinese rich".
