I am up late, as I usually am. I am retired, living alone, and I never set an alarm clock. I usually wake around 6 AM to the sound of the birds in the trees in the backyard. I live in a rural forested area of Washington State. I spent 21 years in submarines in the Navy and for me it is the sounds around me which govern when I wake. I am used to hearing some noises and used to NOT hearing some noises. When a noise out of the ordinary, a regular one missing or an unusual one starting, I wake. This is what the Navy taught me, a sensitivity to the unusual. When comparing my first few hours in the morning with my last few hours at night, I am most definitely more awake and alert in the few hours before I retire for the night, which makes me a "night person" exactly like my mother and totally opposite to my father.
