I was required to wear water shoes while training dolphins and doing marine mammal research last summer and I had the same issue! In the end I had to settle for basic turquoise Speedo ones because I had a hard time finding my size (6). It turned out that everyone was wearing the same sort of thing and no one really looked out of place. Just a baisc pair that fit you will work although some of the more seasoned trainers and researchers were wearing TEVAs. You could check Land's End, Kiefer.com, Target and Teva.com to find a pair you like.
I was glad I got ones that fit me because they really protect your feet while you're running around the compounds and pools and labs all day! At the end of the day I didn't even care what they looked like, I was having too much fun and doing too much work to notice!
Good luck!

If you're trying not to be dorky, just go bare foot. The calluses will build eventually. :)
