I need some help deciding on medicine. I am looking for something to help my anxiety and something to relax me. I use to drink alcohol and most cigs and I was good with that, until I got mono and now I am very weakish lately and paranoid and I know if I start anxiety med then I can't drink. I am also 18 years old. I also do not care to try to get over stuff naturally by breathing in and all that calm down stuff, so I was wondering if I asked my doctor for a small dose of Xanax, or valium, would he probably think I am crazy?

No, he would not think you were crazy, though he might suggest you see a psychiatrist, as they would also help with anxiety.

If you were drinking to handle low level anxiety and/or to regularly overcome stress, then you were probably self-medicating already.
The diazapines (valium, xanax, etc.) do help with anxiety, but, based on what you wrote (tone, choice of symptom emphasis, implied severity) Cognitive Behavioral Thearpy (CBT) or Rational Behavior Therapy (RBT) would probably be the best approach. A doctor may supplement that with one of the tranquilizers.
Drinking to self-medicate is never a good idea.

Oh, go ahead and ask. If he thinks you are crazy, he can probably suggest some good things to try anyway.
Just read up about the side effects. Although, I think the side effects of Xanax or valium are probably better than the side effects of alcohol and tobacco. Inform yourself and make a judgement.

HI, I suffer from anxiety and i am using a medical device that is helping. It is called an Alpha Stimulator. It uses a mild electrical current (nonpainful) to produce alpha waves in your brain. I use it for 20 minutes a day. it also helps with depression and insomnia. It is not a cure-all but does help. Meds are okay for short term or occasional use.
You have to have an RX for the Alpha-Stim and order it over the net. good luck

Well from my experience on asking the Doctor for what you want, they usually don't give it to you like that......you have to say something like; " I was on Xanax/Valium before and I remember it working for me, but I got off of it because I was worried about getting addicted to it, now that I've read up on it, I understand the process and I'd like to give it another try."
And usually that works, well, it did for me anyway......I hope it works for you too. Good luck!

Only if he's a jerk. Tell him you want to try small doses for a few weeks to give you a chance to get yourself together. The drugs work really well, altho they can make you sleepy or goofy if you use too much.
It's best to keep the alcohol to a minimum. It's treacherous stuff.

Go see your physician, get tested, get evaluated and he or she will prescribe a medicine that's right for you. Do not ask him to give you those medicine you've mentioned. Do not expect him to.
