My 12 year old daughter just discovered community theatre last year and loves it. She's in her third production right now. Over the summer, she's taking some classes at a school for performing arts near our city. One of the classes is a backstage make-up and hair class. It's only a one-day class, but it's for kids ages 10-14. The class description says the kids should bring a make-up kit. What kind of make-up kit are they talking about and where would I get one? I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a make-up kit for a 12 year old, so I'd really appreciate some insight into what I need before I go out searching for one. Thank you!

there are a few companys that sell theatrical kits here is two of them: Ben Nye and Mehron sell student makeup kits, these kits will usally include a base, highlights and shadows, cheekrouge, charater pencil, sponges, and powder. you should be able to find them at a local theatrical store or just look them up either company on the web and they should tell you of the nearest dealer, I sell the Ben Nye kits in store and can order in the Mehron. Most average price is $16.00 to $20.00 if you find the prices higher than that are most likly the theatrical kits which are larger.

Kristina has a great answer. Most costume rental places will have these kits readily available. If you don't have any luck there, eBay has some or you can call your local theatres and ask them for resources. You can also look the kits up and give her similar items from your own makeup just for the time being though they will not have the same coverage and consistency as stage makeup. I also vote for the Ben Nye kit. It should have about 8 things in it. A base cream (foundation) close to or a little darker than your daughters skin tone, a four color palette that will be used for eye shadow, highlighting, shadowing, etc., a pencil (probably dark brown), and a couple different sponges. It's pretty basic and should cost about $15. She may want to bring a basic matte lipstick with her as well. Nothing too bright, just a basic color like mom would wear not what all the teens are wearing. It needs to look natural on stage.

By the way, this kit should last her quite a while if she keeps it in good shape.

Go with the Ben Nye Student Make-Up Kit. It comes in different shades for different skin tones, and is a great starter kit.

BTW: That bizarre-looking coarse black sponge is a stipple sponge, used with dark creme to simulate a 5:00 shadow.

I remember that the pupose of that sponge threw me for quite a while.

P.S. Do not forget the Albolene.

P.P.S. Character Shoes are sturdy, low-heeled rehearsal and performance shoes with a strap across the instep, usually available in either tan or black.

Just a tip when it comes to character shoes (I saw the topic brought up and had to share this insight).

Most character shoes come with a wooden heel that can be quite slippery, this heel and sole are in place so that taps can be put on the shoes, but if you are not using them as tap shoes take them to a local shoe repair store and have rubber soles put on the bottom. I've see sooo many girls go sliding around and getting hurt because of the slick bottoms of character shoes. The cost will run you about $20 -$25 but it's not worth getting hurt in rehearsal and then not being able to perform because of it.

I'd go with the Ben-Nye kit. It's a basic kit, but for a one day class, it's probably all you'll need.
