98 came out 10 years ago. If your hardware can't handle 2000 then you should try linux. 98 is really terrible for networking and USB support, and it is not supported by MS anymore.

Can you set up a network connection ??? I don't see a simple answer, 'cause 98SE is not supported as well as it used to be. Right now I'm thinking that setting up a new network connection may be just as expensive as getting a CD-RW drive for the old PC, and the CD-RW and writing software may not even be supported by 98. I know you can still get 10/100 LAN PCI cards 98SE compatible to put in the old PC, and the Vista should have 1 installed, so all else you would need is a wired router/hub to get it all connected. But I can tell you from personal experience, VISTA does not like to see or be seen on the network, and even with firewalls disabled, hard to connect to other PC's for file sharing. Printer sharing works fine. It will get there, but not as easy as 1, 2, 3... BTW, after looking at maplesyrup boy, I really like his option no. 1. I give him a big thumbs up, sometimes the simplest answer is the best...

go to the control panel>system>device manager - check the USB component - see if there is any confict. If there is - remove and restart system without the usb drive. then reinstall driver.
Win98SE probably installed its native driver for the usb drive thereby preventing the actual driver from being installed.
u need to identify which of the usb components (right click -see driver file under properties) and try to identify that file and have it removed (delete). and restart again.
if u r not sure which - take out one by one and have your Win98SE cdrom standing by - if u removed the wrong one it will reinstall asking for the win98se cdrom or other usb driver that u have installed earlier.
a little troublesome if u r using Win98SE - maybe it is about time u move to Vista...

What type of PC or motherboard? With Win98 Microsoft had to release a special release with USB drivers.
UPDATE, here is a link to the original Microsoft USB update, Free download.

http://www.usbman.com/WebDrivers/Win98%20Service%20Pack1/WUCSP.EXE

hope this helps!

PS. You can also identify the CHIPSET on your motherboard and go to the manufacturers website and they should have a drive specific to your PC hardware.

Hi. Win98 has limitations on what is compatible for USB devices. Check the MS website for any late drivers/updates. MS no longer supports Win98 but you may have access to legacy drivers/updates. Good luck!

Be aware that Windows 98 can only support USB if you are running '98 second edition. The original version did not include any capacity for USB

If you have an AMD CPU, and ViaTech USB controller drivers, change them to "Standard USB Controller drivers", WIN98 has problems with that set up.
