i have an older laptop similar to the xps your looking at.(inspiron 9300) 17" screen etc. etc. I love the 17" screen, it is an awsome display and it really isnt a big deal carrying it around. i take mine everywhere and it just istn a problem. if your really concerned about gaming though obviously a desktop is the way to go. i live in the dorms and i have a laptop, and 2 broken desktops in here. the space isnt that big of deal. a desktop would easily fit in a dorm. a laptop really isnt neccessary for school either, i really regret wasting money on it. i thought i would need it for school but a desktop is all you need. heres a website you might wanna look at. i picked some laptops that were high performance and comparable to that xps, take a look you might find something better(they are sorted so that the best rated are at the top)

The m1710 is a nice choice for a lot less than Alienware, but I still consider it pricey. You might look at the Dell Inspiron E1705 with the Geforce Go 7900 upgrade option for video.

Here are some other gaming laptops at pretty nice prices:

Yes, it is a good gamer LT. But the 17 incher may be too large to lug around campus. You can get a 15.4 HP 6500 with a NV 8400 vid card option.

I just came across a site that sends you a laptop for free! I'm ordering mine right now, it's a Sony VAIO and it looks really hot!
