in this day and age I would never do it..either hitch hike or pick one up...
But my mom actually hitch hiked from the east coast to the west coast. She catch a ride with three other people in a VW Bug and they slept on the Four Corners marker ..one in each state.
She actually met my dad by picking him up when he was hitching....
kinda makes me sad that we can not do things like that anymore

Well if your car breaks down and you have no one to call thats one reason.
But the biggest reason is that they need a lift! either they dont have their own car or this is the fastest, easiest way to get from A to B.
It's dangerous but you can still hope that the ride you get will be just a nice little old lady who wants to chat about her 17 cats for the entire ride.

Because they have no other options. I think the better question is why do people pick up hitchhikers when it is so dangerous....

The hitchhiker could be the crazy one and that's why they're not afraid to do it.
