Rail, used as a verb, from old provincial French, means to babble, which in its turn came from the Vulgar Latin, to bray. It was thought to be used in a joking manner, as to bray like an @ss, without logic or reason. In today's usage it means to use loud abrasive language out of rage or anger.

Therefore it seems to mean anger at the passing of days. So much to do and so little time in our lives to accomplish what one wants to do. So in a sense it is a joke (albeit a cruel and futile one) on us and our frail bodies and minds.

"Railing against" time passing is a verbalization of our anger and frustration with our lack of ability to maintain the status quo, i.e. our youth, our accomplishments, our acquisitions. An action that is as useless as the braying of an @ss.

Extend your neck upward. Place the back of your hand, with a moderately closed fist, on your forehead, and say, "Alas! Alas! I am getting older minute by minute!"

Alternatively, you could could sigh loudly as you realize that that woman who was smiling sweetly at you was doing so because you kinda remind her of her grandpaw.
