Your best bet would be to make homemade signs and put them at the ends of your street, and then the connecting streets until you get to the biggest street that leads to your neighborhood. We always made signs in the shape of a giant hand with the index finger pointing the direction that people should go with the words: GARAGE SALE
OUR ADDRESS
DAY(S) OF THE WEEK
in LARGE letters and staple the cardboard or posterboard "hand with the pointing index finger" on a piece of wood. Drive the sign into the ground with a sledge hammer and have the signs guide people to your home from as far away as you can. Then people can just follow the cute signs all the way to your neighborhood and eventually, your house. I have actually had people come to my garage sales and say they weren't even GOING to garage sales but they just HAD to come to ours because the signs were so great!!!! I always would make over a $1,000 dollars, no joke! Also, people going to garage sales would see our signs and THEY would come. This is a great, cheap way to get people to come to your sale, AND they don't have to try to find your house with a classified ad in their hands with just your address!!!
Just be sure you write REALLY BIG on the sign, only put GARAGE SALE, the ADDRESS and the DAY(S) of the week so people can see it from a distance and don't have to stop to read because there is so MUCH info OR the writing it too small. GUARANTEED RESULTS and it's FREE! GOOD LUCK!

I usually by a couple of sheets of fluorescent green cardboard and a brand new felt marker from the local office supply and make some big, simple signs stating time and location and GARAGE SALE! all in bold letters. I hang these around the 'hood at main intersections and at the corner of my street. I also put a big bunch of balloons on the corner of our fence, like 20 or so in all kinds of colours. Don't stay open too long... I usually go 9-noon or 1.

When you do hang signs, be a good neighbor and ASK the people who live on the corners if you can put up your signs. Be sure to take them down when the sale is over.
Does your community have a free newspaper or on line bulletin board? Craig's list is great, http://www.craigslist.com. No-cost advertising. Is there a Pennysaver or Thrifty nickel newspaper in your area?

Florescent papers around the neighborhood.Make sure to put it near the post office and grocery store. Then at the end of your street. The numbers need to be legible from a car,so make them clear. Why not wait til the first of the month, more people will come due to checks coming in....

First off you need to find out if you need a permit to have one.. some places do require that..
Then when you have the exact dates and times make posters up and put them around town.. busy sections, but don't forget to go remove them when you are done.
You can go on line and find many many places to advertise your yardsale for free... google yardsale in your area..
Email people you know.
Put flyers up inside your local stores, most have bulletin boards to place ads..
And the local neighbourhood newspaper should not charge much.. for the ad.. If you have it on a week-end post it for Friday and Saturday in the paper..
Its a lot of work.. be ready for it..
Oh and in your ads on line etc.. don't forget to put no early birds.. as I have had many people showing up at 7AM after posting it for 10 AM and looking in boxes...that drove me nuts.. but if you have large items, furniture etc.. put prices on those first and if they seem interested in that.. don't ever turn down a potential customer..
And Good Luck...

signs are very helpful, especially bright, eyecatching ones. Arrows are nice too.
