could someone explain the steps to me on how to find the slope of its line (on a graph) from these substituted equations?

-6 = 3X + Y
10 = -5X - Y

-6 = 3X + Y
-6 - 3X = Y
-5X +6 +3X = 10
-2X +6 = 10
-2X = 4
X = -2
Y= 0

i hope my question makes sense...anyway, thanks for the help!

-6 = 3X + Y
-6 - 3X = Y

Y = - 3X - 6
This is now in the form Y = mX + b.

So slope is -3.

-6 = 3x + y or y = - 3x - 6

The slope of this line is - 3

10 = -5 x - y is same as y = - 5x - 10

The slope of the line is - 5

By substitution what you got is the point x, y where both the lines intersect each other.

Pl. remember that y = mx + c is the standard form of an equation for a straight line which has a slope m and an intercpet c on the y axis for x = 0

The equations -6 = 3X + Y and 10 = -5X - Y have different slopes. What you got from combining them is their intersection in the cartesian coordinate plane which is the point (-2,0). I suggest so that you won't get confused is using the form y+mx +b (slope-intercept form).. m is the slope while b is the y intercept.. In the given equations -6 = 3x + y has the slope equal to -3 and 10= -5x -y has the slope -5

Each line would actually have a different slope. (-2, 0) is the point of intersection of the two lines, but you can't find just one slope.

To find the slope of the first line, put it in y = mx +b form.

-6 = 3x + y
subtract 3x from both sides

-6 -3x = y

or, switch it around and

y= -3x-6

The slope of the line is the number in front of y, which is -3.

Do the same steps for the second equation and you will have your second slope.

There are two equations for two lines. Convert these equations in y=mx+c form then m is the slope
-6=3x+y
y=-3x-6 slope is -3

10=-5x-y
y=-5x-10 slope is -5

OR rephrase your question.

1.you make one of them Y= whatever
-6 - 3x = Y

2. substitute the Y= whatever into the other equation so
-5x - (-6 -3y) = 10 which makes -5 + 6 + 3x = 10

3. work it out til you get x = whatever in this case x = -2

4. substitute x into -6 =3x +y
which gives you y + 3 (-2) = -6

5. work that out to get y = whatever

6. then put it into coordinates (x, y) in this case (-2, 0)
