My battery is not charging. A couple of weeks ago my idiot lights all started acting crazy, going on for no reason, all at once. Would this be a sympton of my alternator going bad or the voltage regulator. My car is parked at a common cents store. I am thinking of just going and buying an alternator in the morning and putting it in but I would hate to waste the money for a new alternator if it is the voltage regulator. Any advice?
Thanks

Mark, are you nuts. What the heck would my fuel filter have to do with my battery not charging.

The battery is now dead. I jumped the car at work, tried to get it home, but as is symptomatic of a failed alternator the car was just running off the battery w/o charging and it died halfway home.

you did not state what type of car it is. Most cars today have the voltage regulator built int the alternator along with the rectifier.
This may sound too simple but try disconnecting the battery for at least 10 seconds then reconnect - This worked for me on a car a couple of weeks ago - It simple reset the computer

Take the car to a place like Autozone and let them check out the alternator. If it is bad, then you can get another one there. good luck
