ARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH - - - - there were several experiments in Democracy in Western Europe although one can haggle over the term - - - Democracy - - - most were Republics which is what the American Revolutionist aspired to be. Though they had the Greek Example, the MAIN INSPIRATION for Democracy was the United Provinces of the Netherlands - - - - the Pilgrims once took asylum in Holland. The Dutch Republic was Democratic in that Property Owners of the age of Majority had voting privileges in their Parliament.
Other 'Democracies' inspiring the Americans. The Swiss Confederacy, and The Republic of Venice, and The Florentine Republic. Even the Poles & Lithuanians had a Democracy which served as example & inspiration for America.

""""United Netherlands" redirects here. For the "Kingdom of the United Netherlands," see United Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The Republic of the Seven United Netherlands (or "of the Seven United Low Countries") (Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden/Provinciën; also Dutch Republic or United Provinces in short, Belgica Foederata in Latin) was a European republic between 1581 and 1795, in the same location as the modern Kingdom of the Netherlands, which is the successor state."""

Athens in ancient Greece was a democracy but not quite like we think about it as not all citizens had rights, and the Athenians kept slaves.
The First real democracy will rights for all people (including women) was in Iceland.
By 930, most arable land had been claimed and the Althing, a legislative and judiciary parliament, was founded as the political hub of the Icelandic Free State. The same assembly is still in place.

None of the Greek city-states had a true democracy as they always had some sort of king or oligarchy. I believe that the Romans were the first to have a republic type of government and the vikings who settled Iceland were the first to install a democratic government from the start.
