You can do whatever you want . I think people get too caught up in whta's proper and what's not. What's it gonna hurt?

Congratulations on making it through the first year! I'm impressed that you are organized enough at this point to think so far ahead!!

I'd just use word of mouth. I'm assuming most of your friends know the approximate date of your baby's birthday since the big event was just a year ago so they are probably expecting there to be some sort of shindig. So save the postage, ink and time and just mention it to people.

you can...

although, save the dates are normally used for to let out of town guests know when a wedding is going to take place, or when it's a destination wedding.

you can get creative and send something cute, using the same theme as the party or perhaps your son's picture.

I think it's a great idea. People are so busy nowadays, they can note the party on their calender.
